KIDEPO VALLEY NATIONAL PARK

Kidepo valley national park is tucked into the corner of Uganda's border with Sudan and Kenya it is one of the most spectacular parks in Uganda covering an area of 1,442 sq. km. There are three routes to the park; Kampala via-Lira-Kotido-Kidepo is 705km, Kampala via Mbale-Soroti-Moroto-Kidepo is 792Km. Chartered flights are available from Entebbe International to park head quarters. The Park possesses scenery unsurpassed by any other park in East Africa.

The park harbors a greater diversity of fauna that any other park in Uganda; of the 80 mammal species listed in 1971,28 were known not to occur in any other Uganda park. Five species of primates, 465 bird species 112 of which were not recorded in any other park in Uganda by 1972, of the 58 species of birds of prey recorded 14 are believed to be endemic to Kidepo and the Karamojong region.

Attractions in the park include good views of lions in the dry season, in the vast panorama you can watch a constant parade of wildlife: elephant, zebra, buffalo, lion, ostrich, cheetah, zebra, kudu and dik-dik, countless antelope and over 200 species of birds. Kidepo Valley is quite remote; it is easily the most tranquil park containing sensational mountain and savannah landscapes. Two game-viewing loops connect the rest-camp with prime wildlife areas near the Winy River and the rock escarpment to the southwest. On the northern border of the Park are the Kananorok Hot Springs. The Park has spectacular mountains ideal for hikes and savannah landscape for nature walks. Two game viewing loops that lead to prime wildlife areas near the Winwing River and with the rock escarpment to the Southwest, further tracks take you to the Lokadul Palm Tree Forest, at Kananorok Hot Springs on the Park's Northern border with Sudan.

Accommodation in the park is limited, the most up to date being Apoka Rest Camp, however the park also runs a self catering hostel comprising fourteen bandas each with two beds, offers cooking facilities and only basic drinks; beer, soda and water. The park has two “do it your-self” campsites, provisions for water, firewood and charcoal can be arranged.
