This day trip is designed for those who want to explore Uganda’s art culture and neighboring communities. Tour Uganda’s pottery and ceramic-making project and visit art galleries showcasing sculptures and modern contemporary art. At the tail end of the trip, we visit a unique collection of museum-quality traditional African artifacts – sourced from across East and Central Africa – which are available to buy. Throughout the tour, you will have a chance to meet the artists, dealers and craft producers.
At 9:00 am in the morning, embark on a short trip to Mukono to visit Uganda Ceramics, an art and crafts store and pottery school. This vocational training project was set up by Austrians. They and other local artists now export their ceramic pieces to Europe and the USA. Have a chance to learn how to make pots with the guidance of experienced artists from Uganda and Europe.
Continue along the quiet Gayaza Road, stopping for a delicious lunch at the Horse Farmhouse restaurant, with its Africa-inspired menu. Don’t miss trying dishes like Luwombo (food cooked in wrapped banana leaves) and more. After lunch, drive to Gallery Antique a traditional tribal arts gallery showcasing African sculptures, shields, pottery, museum-quality headrests, spears, masks and other exciting ancient art pieces. Meet Joe Ndyanabangi a dealer and collector who has travelled through sub-Saharan Africa for during the last 20 years collecting and researching about tribal artifacts, some of which are now displayed and for sale at his private gallery. Explore his tribal and antiques collection while learning about his travels.
Continue to Umoja Art Gallery where the curator will introduce you to some of Uganda’s newest generation of locally and internationally acclaimed contemporary artists.
Continue to Afriart Gallery, one of East Africa’s best contemporary art galleries. Here you can see Uganda’s exquisite art for yourself. Afriart is a private art gallery that provides a wonderful space for Uganda’s up and coming artists, some of whom you may meet on your visit. The gallery was founded in 2002.
The tour will end when our driver returns you to your drop-off point.
